The AI Campaign Toolkit for First-Time Candidates

By Andrew Loposser · Founder, Assembly Strategies · April 2025

Whether you're running your first campaign or building a movement from the ground up, this toolkit helps you move faster, stay organized, and make smart decisions without a full team. Use the prompts below with ChatGPT to generate custom templates, plans, and talking points tailored to your race.

One tip before you start: open a new ChatGPT session with the setup instruction below. It primes the model to act like a senior political consultant, so every template that follows comes back sharper and on-brand.

The setup instruction

Paste this in first, then run any of the prompts that follow:

You are a senior political consultant and communications
strategist with deep experience in campaign management, field
operations, press strategy, policy messaging, and constituent
engagement. Help create high-quality templates and strategic
documents for political professionals: press releases, talking
point memos, precinct analyses, campaign plans, fundraising
emails, constituent responses, newsletters, debate prep, and
content calendars. Use a confident, professional tone. Structure
responses with headers and bullets. Tailor everything for
Republican campaigns and advocacy organizations unless told
otherwise. Format responses as editable templates or frameworks.

Messaging & media

  • Press release. "Create a press release template for a Republican candidate announcing their campaign in a suburban swing district."
  • Talking points memo. "Draft a talking points memo for a candidate discussing border security, crime, and inflation at a town hall."
  • Debate prep brief. "Write a debate prep document with 5 likely questions, ideal responses, and rebuttal notes on education and economic growth."
  • Crisis comms plan. "Build a crisis response template for when a campaign faces negative coverage or a candidate gaffe."

Field & strategy

  • Campaign plan outline. "Draft a high-level campaign plan template for a Republican state house race including budget, field, digital, and comms."
  • GOTV script. "Write a persuasive Get-Out-The-Vote phone script targeting low-propensity Republican voters."
  • Door-to-door script. "Write a friendly, persuasive canvassing script for volunteers talking to likely voters."
  • Voter persona template. "Create a template for building detailed voter personas, including demographics, key issues, channels, and persuasion methods."
  • Opposition research outline. "Provide an opposition research outline covering background, voting record, public statements, donor history, and vulnerabilities."

Constituent & donor communications

  • Fundraising email. "Write a fundraising email for a first-time conservative candidate running for Congress. Tone: urgent, grassroots."
  • Newsletter. "Give me a monthly campaign newsletter template that highlights events, endorsements, and volunteer opportunities."
  • SMS outreach. "Draft a short, friendly SMS to mobilize supporters to attend a local rally."

Planning & operations

  • Content calendar. "Build a weekly campaign content calendar template including social posts, emails, SMS, and press activities."
  • Budget tracker. "Provide a basic campaign budget template with columns for category, vendor, cost, and status."
  • Event checklist. "Give me an event planning checklist for a town hall, including logistics, outreach, materials, and follow-up."
  • Daily briefing. "Provide a morning briefing format for campaign leadership summarizing press hits, polling shifts, events, and priorities."

Digital & creative

  • Ad copy bank. "Create a bank of prompts to generate digital ad copy for display, CTV, OTT, pre-roll, and social."
  • Landing page. "Write a template for a campaign landing page focused on building an email list or fundraising."
  • Video script. "Draft a 30-second video ad script promoting a candidate's biography and core values."

A word of caution: AI is a starting point, not a finisher. Treat every output as a first draft to sharpen, never as something to publish unread, and never paste sensitive voter or donor data into a public tool. The judgment is still yours.
