How to Build a Custom GPT for Your Boss

By Andrew Loposser · Founder, Assembly Strategies · April 2025

If you work for an elected official, you know the drill: constituent mail, hearing prep, and media coordination all hit at once. A custom GPT, a digital assistant trained to think and sound like your boss, can take a real share of that load off your plate.

What a custom GPT actually is

It's not a generic chatbot. It's a tailored tool built from your office's real statements, documents, and tone. It understands your boss's top issues, writes in their voice, whether that's sharp and policy-heavy or plainspoken and values-based, and generates quick drafts, summaries, and backgrounders. Ask it to "summarize our position on [issue] in 150 words," or "draft a press quote on today's markup," and you get back a solid draft, in your boss's voice, ready to refine.

What it can do

  • Draft consistent constituent mail.
  • Generate on-brand press quotes and op-ed intros.
  • Translate dense policy into plain English.
  • Tailor the same message for different audiences, labor, agriculture, small business.
  • Build quick reference guides from past votes and statements.

If your office has written it before, a GPT can help write it again, faster.

What it can't do

A GPT won't replace a legislative aide. It doesn't make political calls, attend meetings, or guess. A well-built one ships with a single non-negotiable rule: don't make things up, and if you don't know, say so. The goal isn't to replace staff, it's to lighten the lift, especially in high-volume offices where message discipline matters most.

A real example

Prompt: "Summarize our boss's stance on permitting reform for a constituent newsletter."

Response: "Congressman Smith supports streamlining federal permitting to accelerate infrastructure projects, especially in rural areas. He believes reform should balance speed with environmental safeguards and local input. In 2023, he co-sponsored a bipartisan permitting bill to cut red tape without weakening public protections."

A task that used to take 10 to 15 minutes becomes a 10-second draft.

The build itself, training it on the right documents, locking in voice, and engineering it to block hallucinations, is a process worth doing carefully. Andrew walks through the exact step-by-step, including the GPT he built for a member of Congress, in the full guide on The Political Playbook.
